Superficial blood vessels in the skin typically refer to superficial veins and arteries that are present in the dermis and hypodermis layers, including named vessels like the cephalic vein, basilic vein, and superficial temporal artery. These vessels regulate body temperature by adjusting blood flow near the skin surface in response to autonomic signals: dilation allows heat dissipation, while constriction promotes heat retention. They also serve functions in delivering nutrients, removing metabolic wastes, and assisting in wound healing. Clinically, superficial veins may become pathologically dilated (varicose veins), and are sometimes targeted by local treatments, but as a group they do not represent a specific molecular target for drug discovery or selective pharmacological modulation.
Sclerosing agents: induce fibrosis and closure of affected superficial veins. Vasodilators: increase vessel diameter, promoting blood flow, but are not selective for superficial vessels.
