Superficial epithelial and extracellular proteins refers to a broad group of proteins, including mucins and cell-surface glycoproteins, located on the outermost layer of epithelial tissues and their surrounding matrix (DrugBank Online, 2024). This group of proteins does not represent a single molecular entity but rather a functional surface that serves as a target for various lubricating and protective agents, particularly in ophthalmology (PubChem, 2024). Drugs like carboxymethylcellulose and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose bind non-specifically to these proteins through mucoadhesive interactions, which significantly increases the residence time of the medication on the ocular or mucosal surface (NIH DailyMed, 2024). This binding stabilizes the tear film or mucosal barrier, providing a protective layer that reduces mechanical friction and prevents tissue desiccation (StatPearls, 2023). Consequently, this target is essential for the therapeutic management of conditions like dry eye syndrome and other forms of epithelial irritation. By reinforcing the natural barrier, these treatments alleviate symptoms and support the structural integrity of the underlying epithelium.
