Overview

The superficial femoral artery is a major blood vessel in the thigh that continues from the common femoral artery distal to the origin of the deep femoral artery. It travels through the adductor canal and becomes the popliteal artery at the adductor hiatus. The SFA is unique among arteries due to its complex anatomy and hemodynamic characteristics, making it a common site of peripheral arterial disease and atherosclerotic complications. While the SFA itself is not a drug target, it is frequently accessed for endovascular interventions in treating coronary and peripheral vascular disease.
