Overview

Superficial vaginal epithelial cells are the dead, flattened, non-nucleated cells forming the most apical layer (stratum corneum) of the vaginal mucosal epithelium[1][3][5]. They result from terminal differentiation (cornification) of squamous cells, losing nuclei and organelles, and accumulating glycogen, mucins, and keratin proteins[1]. Their main functions are to act as a physical barrier, foster a microenvironment conducive to protective lactobacilli, and deter pathogen invasion by maintaining low pH and structural integrity[1][2][5]. They are shed periodically, influenced by estrogen levels, and are essential for vaginal health, though not a molecular therapeutic target themselves[2][4][5].
