Superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetics are synthetic compounds designed to replicate the activity of the native superoxide dismutase enzyme. Their primary function is to catalyze the conversion of superoxide anion (\(O_2^-\)), a reactive oxygen species, into hydrogen peroxide (\(H_2O_2\)), which is subsequently broken down into water by catalase. This process helps protect cells from oxidative stress and damage caused by reactive oxygen species, which are implicated in cancer, neurodegeneration, aging, and inflammatory diseases.
