Target intelligence / Profile preview
Superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) mRNA is the transcript responsible for the synthesis of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), a critical enzyme located within the mitochondrial matrix. This enzyme plays a fundamental role in the cellular antioxidant defense system by catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen, thereby preventing oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA and proteins (UniProt, 2023). In the context of oncology, SOD2 mRNA is often upregulated in various tumors, where it helps cancer cells survive high levels of metabolic oxidative stress and confers resistance to radiation and chemotherapy (PubMed, 2021). Conversely, a deficiency in SOD2 mRNA expression is associated with increased susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases and cardiovascular dysfunction due to uncontrolled mitochondrial oxidative stress (NIH, 2022). Therapeutic strategies targeting SOD2 mRNA include the use of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) or antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to downregulate its expression in cancer, as well as mRNA-based therapies designed to restore or enhance SOD2 levels in degenerative conditions.
