Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a critical antioxidant enzyme system that protects cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), specifically the superoxide anion radical. SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, thereby reducing oxidative stress within cells. There are three main isoforms of SOD in humans: SOD1 (Cu/Zn-SOD) in the cytoplasm, SOD2 (Mn-SOD) in the mitochondria, and SOD3 (EC-SOD or Extracellular SOD) in the extracellular space. Alterations in expression or function of any SOD isoform are implicated in various diseases associated with oxidative stress.
