Superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimics are synthetic compounds that replicate the catalytic activity of the native superoxide dismutase enzyme. They catalyze the conversion of superoxide anion (O2.-) into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), mitigating oxidative stress and cellular damage. They are being explored for therapeutic applications in conditions where oxidative stress plays a key role, such as ischemia-reperfusion injury, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel diseases. SOD mimics have advantages over native enzymes, including smaller size, better tissue penetration, greater chemical stability, and non-antigenic nature.
