Suppression of tumorigenicity 13, Hsp70-interacting protein pseudogene (gene ID: ENSG00000217769; also known as ST13P1) is a pseudogene in the human genome. While it is homologous to the functional ST13 gene, which encodes a protein involved in the co-chaperone activity with Hsp70, this particular gene does not generate a functional protein product. Pseudogenes like ST13P1 arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events, losing the ability to encode active proteins due to mutations. As such, ST13P1 does not have direct biological function, disease relevance, or utility as a therapeutic target. The functional ST13 gene (not the pseudogene) is a co-chaperone for the Hsp70 heat shock protein family, which are essential molecular chaperones for protein folding and cellular proteostasis. However, this pseudogene variant (ST13P1) is distinguished from the protein-coding ST13 by loss of protein-coding potential. According to GeneCards and similar genomic databases, ST13P1 is annotated purely as a pseudogene, with no evidence of protein product or known biological impact.
