Overview

The microbial cell surface encompasses all structural components presented on the exterior of microbial cells, including the cell wall, membranes, surface proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. In bacteria, these include peptidoglycan, teichoic acids, lipoteichoic acids (in Gram-positive bacteria), and lipopolysaccharide (in Gram-negative bacteria), as well as a diverse array of surface proteins, glycoproteins, and polysaccharides. These structures mediate attachment and communication with host cells, enable immune evasion, facilitate transport, and drive pathogenic processes such as infection, biofilm formation, and invasion. The cell surface is a primary molecular interface for host-pathogen interactions and is frequently targeted by antibiotics, vaccines, and immunotherapies. However, referring simply to "microbial cell surface" rather than a specific component does not capture a precise target molecule, making it too generic for most structured therapeutic or biomarker use.
