Surfactant-associated protein B (SP-B)

Target
SP-B
Molecular classification
Saposins, Lipid Binding Proteins
01

Overview

Surfactant-associated protein B (SP-B) is a small, highly hydrophobic protein essential for lung function. It facilitates the spreading and stability of pulmonary surfactant, lowers surface tension, and prevents alveolar collapse. SP-B also plays a critical role in lipid organization, tubular myelin formation, and surfactant recycling. Deficiency or mutations in SP-B lead to severe neonatal respiratory distress syndrome and is universally lethal if untreated.
