Overview

Surfactant production refers to the biological and industrial processes by which surfactants—amphiphilic molecules that reduce surface tension between two phases—are synthesized. In a physiological context, pulmonary surfactant is produced primarily in the lungs by alveolar type II cells and plays a critical role in reducing surface tension at the air-liquid interface of the alveoli, preventing lung collapse and aiding gas exchange. Industrially, surfactants are manufactured for use in detergents, emulsifiers, wetting agents, and other applications.
