Overview

SUGP2 (SURP and G-patch domain-containing protein 2) is a member of the arginine/serine-rich family of splicing factors, functioning as a chromatin-associated protein primarily involved in pre-mRNA processing and regulation of alternative splicing[1][3][5][7]. It localizes predominantly to the nucleus—especially in the testis and brain—and contains conserved SURP1/2 and G-patch domains, which confer RNA-binding and splicing regulation activity[1][2][6]. SUGP2 regulates the alternative splicing of genes related to ion and energy metabolism during spermatogenesis, but knockout models reveal it is dispensable for male fertility, with no major developmental or meiotic defects, indicating possible functional redundancy with its paralog SUGP1[1]. No direct link to human disease or therapeutic applications is currently established.
