Survivin (BIRC5)

Target
BIRC5
Molecular classification
Inhibitor of Apoptosis (IAP) protein
01

Overview

Survivin, also known as BIRC5, is a protein that inhibits apoptosis and regulates cell division. It is highly expressed in embryonic development and most human tumors, but rarely detectable in differentiated adult tissues. Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family. It plays a dual role in inhibiting programmed cell death and regulating cell division, making it a critical factor in cancer biology. It is an attractive target for anticancer therapies.

Baculoviral IAP Repeat Containing Protein 5

Mechanism of action

Antisense oligonucleotides bind to survivin mRNA, leading to its degradation and reduced survivin protein levels. Small molecule inhibitors directly bind to survivin and disrupt its function. Immunotherapies stimulate the immune system to target and kill cells expressing survivin.
