A suspending agent is a pharmaceutical excipient or inactive ingredient used to stabilize suspensions by maintaining the uniform distribution of insoluble drug particles within a liquid medium (StatPearls, 2023). These agents function primarily by increasing the viscosity of the continuous phase or by providing a protective film around particles to prevent aggregation, thereby ensuring consistent dosing and preventing rapid sedimentation (Remington: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy). Common examples include synthetic polymers like carboxymethylcellulose and natural gums such as xanthan, acacia, or tragacanth (NCBI PubChem). Unlike therapeutic targets such as receptors, enzymes, or transporters, suspending agents are pharmacologically inert and do not elicit a biological response or treat a disease directly. Their role is strictly limited to the physical stability, shelf-life, and delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients in liquid dosage forms.
Increases the viscosity of the liquid vehicle to reduce the sedimentation rate of solid particles according to Stokes' Law and provides steric or electrostatic stabilization to prevent particle caking.
