Suspicious calcification cluster detection in breast imaging

Overview

Detection of suspicious calcification clusters in mammography and tomosynthesis images refers to an imaging-based approach to identifying groups of calcium deposits in the breast that may indicate underlying malignancy, particularly ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or invasive breast cancer. Radiologists and computer-aided detection (CADe) systems analyze the spatial arrangement, number (e.g., five or more calcifications in a cluster), morphology, and distribution of these calcifications to distinguish benign from malignant processes. While these clusters are important diagnostic findings in breast cancer screening, they are not themselves biological targets (e.g., receptors or enzymes), but are features detected via imaging modalities for diagnostic and prognostic purposes.
