Overview

SUZ RNA-binding domain-containing protein 1 (SZRD1) is a highly conserved intracellular protein characterized by the presence of SUZ and SUZ-C RNA-binding domains. It is broadly expressed in human tissues, with notable levels in leukocytes, lung, lymph node, pancreas, placenta, and spleen. SZRD1 localizes primarily to the cytoplasm and nucleus. Functional studies show that SZRD1 inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis by promoting G2/M phase cell cycle arrest, upregulation of CDK inhibitor P21, and activation of caspase-3. Mechanistically, overexpression of SZRD1 suppresses phosphorylation of signaling proteins ERK1/2, AKT, and STAT3. While its molecular and biological roles suggest importance in regulating cell division and apoptosis, its function in humans remains incompletely characterized. SZRD1 is implicated in cancer biology, acting as a tumor suppressor in some contexts (by reducing cell proliferation and promoting apoptosis) but also as a pro-tumorigenic factor in certain glioma regulatory networks[1][3][4][5]. No drugs currently target SZRD1, and it is not considered an established therapeutic target[2][5][6].
