The sweat duct lumen is the internal channel of the eccrine or apocrine sweat gland that facilitates the transport of sweat from the deep secretory coil to the epidermal surface. It is not a molecular target in the traditional pharmacological sense (such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter); rather, it is an anatomical compartment that serves as the primary site of action for topical antiperspirant therapies. These agents, typically containing aluminum salts like aluminum chloride, function by reacting with sweat and ductal proteins within the lumen to form a physical precipitate or plug, which obstructs the duct and prevents the release of sweat to the skin surface (StatPearls, 2023). Beyond its role as a conduit, the lumen is the site of critical physiological processes, including the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions mediated by the Epithelial Sodium Channel (ENaC) and the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR), which are essential for producing hypotonic sweat (PubMed, 2016). Pathological conditions associated with the sweat duct lumen include hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and miliaria (heat rash), the latter of which results from the physical blockage or rupture of the ductal walls.
