Overview

The sweat gland duct lumen is the central anatomical cavity of the sweat gland's excretory duct, which facilitates the movement of sweat from the secretory coil to the skin surface. Its primary biological role involves the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions from the primary secretory fluid, a process essential for maintaining electrolyte balance during thermoregulation (StatPearls, 2023). This ion exchange is primarily mediated by the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) and the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) lining the ductal walls (PubMed, 2003). In the context of pharmacology, the lumen is the site where topical antiperspirants, such as aluminum salts, form obstructive polymers or "plugs" that physically block the release of sweat (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2016). Pathologically, the lumen is involved in hyperhidrosis, where excessive sweat production occurs, and cystic fibrosis, where defective luminal ion reabsorption leads to high sweat salt content (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2024). Although it is an anatomical structure rather than a single molecular receptor, it remains a critical focal point for topical therapies and diagnostic testing.
