SWIM-type zinc finger 7 associated protein 1 (SWSAP1) is a member of the RAD51 paralogue family that possesses an ATPase activity preferentially stimulated by single-stranded DNA. SWSAP1 is a component of the human Shu complex (including SWS1), which promotes and stabilizes RAD51 filament assembly during homologous recombination-mediated DNA repair. SWSAP1 antagonizes anti-recombinase FIGNL1, thereby protecting RAD51 filaments from premature disassembly and facilitating efficient DNA repair. Mutation or deficiency in SWSAP1 impairs DNA repair via homologous recombination, potentially leading to genomic instability and increased risk for certain cancers. SWSAP1 contains a SWIM-type zinc finger domain and interacts with DNA and key proteins in the recombination machinery.
