Synapsin III is a member of the synapsin family of neuron-specific phosphoproteins found on the cytoplasmic surface of synaptic vesicles[1][2][4]. It shares major conserved domains (A, C, and E) with synapsin I and II, but possesses a unique proline/glutamine-rich domain (J)[1][2]. Its expression is primarily restricted to the brain and neurons, where it is thought to regulate synapse formation and neurotransmitter release[1][2][4]. The SYN3 gene is located on human chromosome 22q12.3, a locus associated with schizophrenia, implicating synapsin III as a candidate gene in neuropsychiatric disease susceptibility[1][2]. Multiple isoforms are generated by alternative splicing. No direct pharmacological targeting or established safety concerns are reported for synapsin III.
