Synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A) is a transmembrane protein located on synaptic vesicles in mammalian neuronal and endocrine cells. It is present in all synaptic terminals and plays a key role in regulating neurotransmitter release at synapses. It modulates synaptic vesicle exocytosis and endocytosis. Alterations or dysfunctions involving SV2A have been implicated in epilepsy and neurodegenerative conditions.
The precise mechanism by which levetiracetam and brivaracetam affect or modulate the function of SV2A remains unclear. They bind selectively to SV2A and are effective anticonvulsants.
