Synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2B (SV2B) is a member of the SV2 protein family, integral membrane proteins found on synaptic vesicles in neurons. SV2B is critical for proper neurotransmission, playing roles in the regulation of synaptic vesicle exocytosis and neurotransmitter release. It interacts with other synaptic vesicle proteins like synaptotagmin and may act as a master regulator of vesicular structure. While most clinical focus has been on its paralog SV2A, emerging evidence implicates SV2B in neurodegenerative diseases. Recent structural studies suggest that anticonvulsants bind a conserved central site shared among all three paralogs including SV2B; this provides a blueprint for future drug design targeting this family.
