Synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) is a transmembrane glycoprotein located on the membrane of synaptic vesicles in mammalian neuronal and endocrine cells. It plays a crucial role in regulating neurotransmitter release at synapses by modulating synaptic vesicle exocytosis and interacts with synaptotagmin. Deficiency or dysfunction of SV2A has been linked to neurological disorders including epilepsy, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease. It is also the molecular target for antiepileptic drugs like levetiracetam and brivaracetam.
Stabilizes an inhibited conformation of the transporter-like protein, reducing neuronal activity.
