The synaptic vesicular amine transporter (VMAT), also known as the vesicular monoamine transporter, is a membrane protein responsible for transporting monoamine neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and histamine) from the cytosol into synaptic vesicles within neurons. This process is essential for the storage and regulated release of these neurotransmitters during synaptic transmission. VMATs function as antiporters, using a proton gradient to accumulate monoamines inside storage granules or synaptic vesicles for rapid release upon neuronal stimulation. Dysfunction or inhibition of VMAT activity has been implicated in various neurological disorders including Parkinson’s disease and drug addiction.
