Synaptic vesicular amine transporter 1 (VMAT1) is a membrane-embedded protein responsible for transporting monoamine neurotransmitters into synaptic vesicles within neurons. This process is essential for the storage and subsequent regulated release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and histamine into the synaptic cleft during neurotransmission. It is encoded by the SLC18A1 gene and belongs to the solute carrier family 18 (SLC18).
