VMAT2, or Vesicular Monoamine Transporter 2, is an integral membrane protein encoded by the SLC18A2 gene. It transports monoamine neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and histamine) from the cellular cytosol into synaptic vesicles. VMAT2 plays a critical role in neurotransmitter storage, release, and protection from autoxidation. It is expressed in both central and peripheral nervous systems and is implicated in neurological and psychiatric disorders such as Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. VMAT2 is a target for drugs like tetrabenazine, used in treating Huntington's chorea, and is also affected by drugs of abuse like amphetamine and MDMA.
