Overview

Synaptogyrin-1 is an integral membrane protein localized to presynaptic vesicles in neuronal cells. It belongs to the synaptogyrin family and is implicated in modulating synaptic plasticity, exocytosis, and vesicle trafficking. The gene is located on chromosome 22q13.1 and produces several transcript variants. Although the exact molecular function remains unclear, studies in animal models suggest its role in regulating synaptic structure and function. Genetic mutations and polymorphisms in SYNGR1 are associated with increased susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, making it a candidate gene for research in these pathologies.
