Overview

Synaptonemal complex central element protein 1 (SYCE1) is a structural protein integral to the central element of the synaptonemal complex, a meiosis-specific structure that physically links homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis[1][2][4]. SYCE1 plays a crucial role in the initiation and elongation of synapsis, making it essential for homologous chromosome pairing and recombination[1][2]. The protein is composed predominantly of α-helical coiled-coil domains, forming an anti-parallel dimer that acts as a physical strut to stabilize the central region of the synaptonemal complex[1]. SYCE1 interacts with other synaptonemal complex proteins such as SYCP1 and SYCE3, and its function is indispensable for correct meiotic chromosome segregation[3]. Mutations in SYCE1 have been associated with specific human infertility disorders including premature ovarian failure and spermatogenic failure[2]. Currently, SYCE1 is not a therapeutic target for drugs but is an important biomarker for genetic diagnosis in reproductive medicine.
