Overview

Synaptonemal complex central element protein 2 (SYCE2) is a major structural component of the central element of the synaptonemal complex, a tripartite protein assembly that physically links paired homologous chromosomes during meiotic prophase I[5][6]. SYCE2 forms highly stable hetero-oligomeric complexes (notably as a tetramer and in an octameric complex with TEX12), which polymerize to reinforce the longitudinal structure of the synaptonemal complex[1][2][7]. It is essential for proper synapsis and fertility, but is not currently considered a target for therapeutic drugs[1][5][3][6]. There are no known drugs or biomarkers associated with SYCE2, and it is not classified as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter but rather as a structural chromosome-associated protein crucial for meiotic cell division[1][5][6].
