Overview

Synaptonemal complex central element protein 3 (SYCE3) is a meiosis-specific structural protein required for the assembly of the central element of the synaptonemal complex, a supramolecular protein structure that forms between homologous chromosomes during meiosis to facilitate their proper recombination and segregation[1][2][4][6]. SYCE3 acts as a molecular adapter during synapsis, directly binding the SYCP1 lattice and actively remodeling its structure to promote the maturation of the synaptonemal complex. It forms dimers and higher-order oligomers, physically recruits other central element proteins such as SYCE1 and SYCE2-TEX12, and is essential for functional chromosome synapsis and fertility[1][2][3][4][6]. Mutations or absence of SYCE3 disrupt the assembly of the central element of the synaptonemal complex, leading to aberrant meiosis and infertility but not directly to classical human disease syndromes[1][2][3].
