Overview

Synaptonemal complex protein 1 (SYCP1) is a core structural component of the synaptonemal complex, a supramolecular protein scaffold that forms between pairs of homologous chromosomes during meiosis in germ cells[2][3]. SYCP1 self-assembles into transverse filaments, forming a zipper-like lattice that stabilizes chromosome pairing and enables genetic recombination and accurate chromosome segregation[3]. SYCP1 consists of long α-helical coiled-coil domains, oligomerizing into an obligate tetrameric structure with N-terminal and C-terminal assembly sites[2][3]. It is essential for fertility, with mutations or dysfunction leading to meiotic failure and infertility. SYCP1 is also classified as a cancer/testis antigen and is occasionally used as a biomarker in certain cancers[2]. There are currently no drugs known to directly target SYCP1, nor is it considered a therapeutic target in the classic sense (such as a receptor or enzyme)[2][3].
