Overview

Synaptonemal complex protein 3 (SYCP3) is a structural protein required for the formation and stabilization of the lateral elements of the synaptonemal complex during meiosis. SYCP3 forms highly elongated, helical tetramers that bind DNA via their N-terminal regions, enabling looping and compaction of homologous chromosomes to support proper recombination and crossover formation during gametogenesis. SYCP3 self-assembles into filamentous higher-order structures along the chromosome axis, in cooperation with other synaptonemal complex constituents. It is not considered a classical drug target, but its dysregulation has been linked to infertility and cancer due to disruption of normal chromosome segregation and DNA repair pathways[1][3].
