SYPL1 pseudogene
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, processed pseudogene or unprocessed pseudogene

Overview

The synaptophysin-like 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000270890) is a non-coding genomic sequence similar in arrangement and sequence to the functional Synaptophysin-like 1 (SYPL1) gene but contains mutations, deletions, or other disablements that prevent it from being expressed as a protein-coding gene. Pseudogenes such as this one can occasionally be transcribed into RNA, but do not normally produce functional protein. Their biological relevance is generally minimal, although rare exceptions exist in which pseudogenes can influence gene regulation via various mechanisms. The SYPL1 gene itself encodes a protein involved in synaptic transmission and vesicle trafficking, but the pseudogene version does not share these functions.

Biological functions

No direct biological function as a protein; pseudogenes may occasionally be transcribed and affect regulation, but this is not typical for SYPL1 pseudogene
