Overview

Synaptophysin-like protein 1 (SYPL1), also known as Pantophysin, is an integral membrane protein containing a MARVEL domain and is widely expressed in neuroendocrine and non-neuroendocrine tissues[1][2][3]. SYPL1 is associated with small cytoplasmic transport vesicles and is believed to play a central role in vesicle trafficking and membrane apposition[2][3]. Structurally, SYPL1 shares similarity with the synaptophysin/physin family and can form multimeric complexes within membranes[2]. It has been shown to impact cell proliferation and apoptosis, particularly in certain cancers such as pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma, where it promotes cancer cell survival and is linked to poor prognosis[1][3]. Its expression is associated with pathways involved in oxidative stress and antioxidant activity, and it is implicated in modulating processes like the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) via NF-κB/Snail signaling in cancer progression[1][3]. There are currently no known drugs specifically targeting SYPL1, and it is not classified as a therapeutic target, receptor, transporter, or enzyme.
