Synaptoporin (Synpr)

Target
Synpr
Molecular classification
Integral membrane protein, MARVEL domain family member, Vesicular channel protein
01

Overview

Synaptoporin is a 37 kDa integral membrane protein located on synaptic vesicles, sharing high sequence and structural similarity with synaptophysin but possessing a divergent cytoplasmic tail[2][3]. It is a member of the MARVEL (MAL and Related proteins for VEsicle trafficking and membrane Link) domain family, with four conserved transmembrane domains and high expression in the central nervous system. Synaptoporin forms part of a family of vesicular channel proteins that may contribute to synaptic vesicle membrane organization, transporter or channel activity, and protein–protein interactions during neurotransmitter release. Though synaptoporin is not a therapeutic target, it is used to distinguish subpopulations of synaptic vesicles and as an anatomical CNS marker in some research contexts[2][3][4].

Mechanism of action

None known (no established mechanisms involving pharmacological modulation of synaptoporin)

03

Biological functions

Synaptic vesicle membrane organizationPutative ion channel or transporter in synaptic vesiclesMay interact with vesicle sorting machinery (e.g., V-ATPase, synaptobrevin)Involved in synaptic vesicle subpopulation distribution
04

Disease associations

Other (No reports directly linking synaptoporin with specific diseases; studies focus on expression and structural role within synaptic vesicles and its use as a neuronal marker)
05

Safety considerations

None known (structure and localization suggest low risk for direct safety concerns, as it is not a drug target)
06

Interacting drugs

None known (no approved drugs shown to directly interact with synaptoporin)
07

Biomarkers

Sometimes used as a neuronal marker for small synaptic vesicles; involved in neuroanatomical or injury-related studies
