Synaptotagmin 15 pseudogene (ENSG00000285257) is a non-functional genomic DNA segment derived from the synaptotagmin 15 gene. Pseudogenes arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition and, in this case, lack the ability to code for a functional protein product, distinguishing them from active members of the synaptotagmin family. Synaptotagmin 15 itself (SYT15, associated with ENSG00000204176) is a protein involved in vesicle trafficking, but the pseudogene described by ENSG00000285257 plays no direct biological or therapeutic role and is not considered a drug target. Pseudogenes are often generated by genomic duplication events followed by inactivation mutations or by reverse-transcribed mRNA integration (processed pseudogenes).
