Target intelligence / Profile preview

Synaptotagmin-2 (SYT2)

Target
SYT2
Molecular classification
Synaptic vesicle protein, Calcium sensor
01

Overview

Synaptotagmin-2 (SYT2) is a synaptic vesicle membrane protein and a major calcium sensor that regulates neurotransmitter release at synapses. It contains two C2 domains (C2A and C2B) that bind calcium ions and phospholipids, triggering rapid fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic plasma membrane. SYT2 is essential for proper synaptic transmission, especially at neuromuscular junctions, and its loss leads to severe motor dysfunction and impaired synaptic transmission.
