Overview

Synaptotagmin-binding cytoplasmic RNA-interacting protein (SYNCRIP), also known as hnRNP Q, is an RNA-binding protein belonging to the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein family. It has critical functions in mRNA splicing, stability, localization, and translational regulation by binding to specific sequences in mRNAs and interacting with other RNA-binding proteins. SYNCRIP is implicated in the transport and local translation of neuronal mRNAs, influencing synaptic growth, synaptic plasticity, and retrograde signaling at neuromuscular junctions[1]. In cancer biology, particularly colorectal cancer, SYNCRIP promotes cell proliferation and migration and inhibits apoptosis by upregulating targets like DNMT3A[2]. It is also associated with complexes or pathways implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, including Fragile X syndrome and spinal muscular atrophy, and interacts genetically and physically with other proteins central to neuronal function[1][3]. Despite these important roles, SYNCRIP itself is not currently regarded as a direct therapeutic target (e.g., receptor, enzyme, or druggable protein), though its dysregulation is a marker of disease and a node in disease-relevant RNA regulatory networks[2][3].
