Overview

Synergistic interactions refer to situations in biology, pharmacology, or toxicology where the combination of two or more agents (such as drugs or chemicals) produces an effect that is greater than the sum of their individual effects[1][3][5][7][9]. This phenomenon underlies the rationale for combination drug therapy, multi-target treatment strategies, and risk assessment in chemical exposure. Synergy can occur at many levels, from molecular pathways to whole-organism responses, but "synergistic interaction" itself is not a molecule, receptor, enzyme, or other structured target[1][3][5][6][7]. It is a mechanistic or phenomenological term used to describe outcomes resulting from the interaction between multiple factors.
