Overview

Synovial fluid is a viscous, egg white–like solution found in the cavities of synovial joints. It serves as both a biological lubricant and a medium for nutrient and waste exchange within the joint space. The fluid is produced by the synovium (synovial membrane), which lines the inner surface of joint capsules. Alterations in composition or volume are associated with various joint diseases.
