Overview

Synovial fluid restoration refers to therapeutic strategies aimed at replenishing or mimicking the native synovial fluid in diseased or injured joints. Synovial fluid is a viscous ultrafiltrate primarily composed of hyaluronic acid, lubricin, proteins, cytokines, and nutrients that collectively enable lubrication, shock absorption, nutrient delivery, waste removal, and joint stability. Its loss or degradation, commonly observed in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or following joint injury, leads to increased friction, cartilage damage, and joint dysfunction. Synovial fluid restoration is most frequently attempted through intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid preparations to temporarily restore normal viscosity and biomechanical function, though efficacy and safety may vary and this does not address the underlying molecular defects present in many joint pathologies[1][2][3]. Because "synovial fluid restoration" is a process and not a molecular target, it should not be treated as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or similar entity. For structured molecular or therapeutic target data, focus should instead be placed on specific components of synovial fluid such as hyaluronan, proteoglycan-4 (lubricin), or involved cytokines.
