The synovial macromolecular network is a specialized, three-dimensional structural system within the synovial joint, primarily composed of high-molecular-weight hyaluronan, lubricin (proteoglycan 4), and a meshwork of collagen fibrils (Source: Encyclopedia.pub, 2023). It functions as a macromolecular sieve that regulates the semipermeability of the synovial lining, controlling the exchange of solutes and nutrients between the blood and the joint cavity (Source: Musculoskeletal Key, 2021). Biomechanically, this network is responsible for the unique viscoelastic properties of synovial fluid, providing boundary lubrication and shock absorption to protect articular cartilage from mechanical stress and wear (Source: NIH, 2024).
