Synovial sarcoma X breakpoint protein 5 (SSX5) is a member of the SSX gene family, which encodes highly homologous proteins that may function as transcriptional repressors and modulators of transcription. SSX5 can elicit humoral and cellular immune responses in cancer patients and is considered a cancer/testis antigen, primarily expressed in a variety of tumor tissues but not in most normal adult tissues except for testis. Unlike some related SSX genes (e.g., SSX1, SSX2), SSX5 is not implicated in the characteristic t(X;18) chromosomal translocation found in synovial sarcoma. Its restricted expression to tumor tissues, including hepatocellular carcinoma, makes it a potential target for cancer vaccine-based immunotherapy and as a diagnostic marker for cancer detection. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene.
