Overview

Syntaxin-4 is a plasma membrane t-SNARE protein critical for the docking and fusion of transport vesicles during vesicle-mediated exocytosis[1]. It is essential for processes such as the translocation of glucose transporter SLC2A4 (GLUT4) to the plasma membrane in response to insulin, contributing to glucose homeostasis, and is found in neurons, where it regulates postsynaptic membrane trafficking and is required for synaptic plasticity (including long-term potentiation)[2]. Syntaxin-4 is widely expressed with key roles in neurons, adipocytes, and epithelial cells, and its dysfunction is associated with autosomal recessive nonsyndromic deafness and potentially with some cancers (as a renal carcinoma antigen)[1][2][5].
