Synthetic Ion Channel

Molecular classification
Ion Channel, Synthetic Molecule, Supramolecular Assembly, DNA Origami Structure
01

Overview

Synthetic ion channels are man-made chemical compounds designed to mimic the function of natural ion channels by inserting into lipid bilayers, forming pores, and allowing ions to flow across membranes. These artificial channels can be constructed from a wide variety of molecular architectures, including small molecules, peptides, supramolecular assemblies (such as capsules and cages), DNA origami structures, and inorganic nanocapsules. They facilitate passive transport of ions down their electrochemical gradient and can be designed to exhibit gating behavior. Potential applications include single-molecule sensing, therapeutics (e.g., anticancer agents and antibiotics), and biomedical engineering.
