It functions as an antiporter, importing essential amino acids in exchange for intracellular substrates. LAT1 forms a heterodimeric complex with 4F2hc/CD98, which is essential for its function. It plays critical roles in supplying essential amino acids for protein synthesis, brain function, and supporting rapid growth in cancer cells.
