Overview

Systemic and tissue oxygenation refers to the integrated physiological process of delivering oxygen from the atmosphere to the mitochondria of cells throughout the body. This process relies on the coordinated function of the respiratory system for oxygen uptake, the cardiovascular system for transport via hemoglobin, and the microvasculature for distribution to specific tissues (StatPearls, 2023). Maintaining optimal oxygen tension is vital for aerobic respiration and energy production; deviations can lead to pathological states such as hypoxia or hyperoxia-induced oxidative stress (NIH, 2022). Although it is a physiological outcome rather than a discrete molecular target, it is a central focus of clinical management in anesthesia, intensive care, and emergency medicine. Therapeutic strategies to improve oxygenation include the administration of medical oxygen, blood transfusions, and pharmacological agents that enhance red blood cell production or modulate vascular resistance (PubMed, 2021). Monitoring this state is crucial in clinical settings using biomarkers like arterial oxygen tension and blood lactate levels to guide treatment in conditions such as sepsis, shock, and respiratory failure.
