The kidneys serve as the primary regulatory organ, adjusting the excretion and reabsorption of these substances in response to endocrine signals like antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and aldosterone (Merck Manual, 2023). Although not a single molecular target, this physiological balance is the therapeutic focus of numerous pharmacological agents, including diuretics and electrolyte replacements. Dysregulation of this composition is a hallmark of several major pathologies, including congestive heart failure, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease (PubMed, 2021).
