Target intelligence / Profile preview
Systemic fluid and electrolyte composition refers to the precise regulation of water and essential ions—such as sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate—within the body's fluid compartments (StatPearls, 2023). This homeostatic state is fundamental for maintaining blood pressure, cellular volume, and the electrochemical gradients required for nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction (NIH, 2022). The kidneys serve as the primary regulatory organ, adjusting the excretion and reabsorption of these substances in response to endocrine signals like antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and aldosterone (Merck Manual, 2023). Although not a single molecular target, this physiological balance is the therapeutic focus of numerous pharmacological agents, including diuretics and electrolyte replacements. Dysregulation of this composition is a hallmark of several major pathologies, including congestive heart failure, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease (PubMed, 2021).
Pharmacological agents modulate systemic fluid and electrolyte composition by targeting specific renal transporters (e.g., NKCC2, NCC, ENaC) or hormone receptors (e.g., Vasopressin V2 receptor, Mineralocorticoid receptor) to alter the renal excretion or retention of water and solutes (StatPearls, 2023; Merck Manual, 2023).
