Overview

"Systemic fluid compartments" refers to the conceptual and physiological divisions of fluid within the human or animal body. The two primary compartments are the **intracellular fluid (ICF)** (inside cells, about two-thirds of total body water) and **extracellular fluid (ECF)** (outside cells, about one-third of total body water)[1][3][5][6]. The ECF can further be subdivided into **interstitial fluid** (surrounding tissue cells), **intravascular fluid** (blood plasma), and **transcellular fluids** (such as cerebrospinal, synovial, and pleural fluid)[1][2][3][6]. Fluid movement between these compartments is regulated by osmotic and hydrostatic pressures, as described by the Starling equation and related physical principles[4][7]. Essential physiological parameters associated include **osmolality**, **electrolyte concentration**, and **volume** of each compartment. These are vital to maintaining normal cellular and organ function and become central to the diagnosis and management of diseases characterized by fluid imbalance, but these concepts are not a single protein, gene, receptor, or other traditional drug target[1][5][7].
